Row across Florida

December 2, 2010

UF rowersThe University of Florida rowing team will be rowing 10,000 meters today without ever leaving Turlington Plaza.

In an attempt to raise money, the team brought out stationary rowing machines, or ergometers, to Turlington Plaza for their “Row Across Florida Fundraiser.”

According to sophomore and team member Isabelle McCullough, the money will be used to replace some of the team’s older boats, which cost $30,000 a piece. McCullough said that the event was intended to be a creative method to not only raise money but to boost team morale as well.

“I think it’s a unique thing that really makes people more aware of the team,” McCullough said. “And it’s a good team building exercise too.”

McCullough said that the rowers would finish the 10,000 meter stretch, which is roughly the width of Florida, in just under 40 minutes.
